The state capital of New South Wales and the biggest city in Australia as far as population goes. Sydney welcomes thousands of visitors every year and with so many great things to see and do here it won’t come as a surprise to people that know the city.

As well as containing the world’s largest natural harbour Sydney has something for nature lovers and those that like city breaks in equal measures.

Here are some of our favourite things about Sydney and we hope we inspire you to try some of them out.

First off, seeing as we already mentioned the Harbour it is worth talking about both the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Both of these are iconic and are essential photo opportunities.

At the Sydney Opera House you can experience one of the great concerts held here, eat at one of the restaurants, visit the cinema or take a tour of the building.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is open to walk or cycle or if you are feeling a bit more adventurous you could even book yourself one of the climbing tours. Don’t worry though, you won’t need climbing experience to do this.

Sydney also boasts a number of stunning coastal walks so if you want to see a bit more of what the country has to offer get your walking shoes on. The Bondi to Coogee trail is particularly popular with visitors.

If you want to experience a more laid back holiday you can hit one of Sydney’s many great beaches. Bondi Beach, Bronte Beach, Gordons Bay, Manly Beach, Palm Beach, Balmoral Beach, Nielsen Park and Watson's Bay are just a few of the options you can pick from. You don’t have to be a beach bum to enjoy them with some ideal for surfers.

There is also the famous Landmark Ocean swimming pool just off Bondi Beach for people that like the idea of an ocean swim but aren’t keen on the currents and aquatic wildlife.

The cities Botanic Gardens which date back to 1810 are a wonderful and tranquil way to relax in the afternoon. The gardens are ideal for picnics or just appreciating the incredible array of fauna.

For people looking for a bit more natural nature the Royal National Park is just a short drive away from the city centre. Over 15000 hectares of land ensure you will have plenty of exploring to do when you get there.

If you love to go animal spotting then head along to Taronga Zoo, you can even see Koalas and Platypus here as well as chimps, giraffes and Komodo Dragons.

To find out more about the history of Australia and Sydney in particular we would also recommend taking in an Aboriginal tour. There are a few great ones worth researching.

For the culture vultures out there why not take a trip along to The Art Gallery of New South Wales. With different exhibitions all year round it is worth checking out their calendar in advance.

These are just a few of the suggestions we thought might improve your trip to Sydney but there is so much more to get into when you start investigating.
